Daniel “Al” Hudgins, Jr.

I am extremely proud to be the Principal at Summers County High School. I was previously the assistant principal and started my new position on Jan. 2nd 2019. The faculty, staff, leadership, and community has welcomed me with open arms and are very supportive.

My name is Daniel “Alan” Hudgins, Jr. The 2019-2020 school year will be my 14th year in education and my 4th year as an Administrator. I taught Social Studies for 10 years. I have coached football and baseball.

I have been married to my amazing wife Lindsay since 2003. She has been a teacher for 14 years, and currently teaches Kindergarten. We have three children; Alexander, Alivianna, and Zane.

I am honored to be from southern West Virginia and the coal mining heritage of my grandfathers and my dad. I graduated from Wyoming East High School in 1999. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and History in 2004 and a Bachelor of Science in Education in 2005 at Concord University. I am a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon international fraternity. In 2015, I earned a Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Supervision from Concord University. I have lived or worked in Mercer, Raleigh, Wyoming, McDowell, and Summers County.

Summers County High School is classified as a “A” school. I envision SCHS as a “AAAA” school because of the focus on Academics, Arts, Athletics, and Attitudes. Our staff encourages students to achieve success in “Academic” programs. We promote the “Arts” for students to be creative in our CTE and fine arts programs. In “Athletics” we recognize the values and sportsmanship learned through a strong sports tradition. Lastly, we recognize the need for proper “Attitude”. The faculty and staff at SCHS set high behavioral expectations for all our young men and women. Ultimately, we are preparing our students with the tools needed to become college and career ready with our Career and Technical Education and our AP College preparation programs. With these skills we plan to prepare our students to become productive citizens for the 21st century workforce.

Message from the Assistant Principal

Hello Bobcats,

Welcome to Summers County High School, where we expect our students to attend, behave, and perform. As the assistant principal of this amazing school, I hope to be able to help all students and staff to achieve their goals. I would like to take a few moments to give you a little window into who I am.

I am from Putnam County, WV, and a graduate of Hurricane High School.  While I grew up in Hurricane, WV, I spent most of my holidays in southern WV, with my mother’s family, in Mercer County. During those visits, the trip to Hinton would often be a visit I looked forward to. I may not have grown up in southern WV, but its culture and history are in my blood.  Upon graduation from high school, I went to Concord University for a degree in History and Political Science, and from there to Western Governor’s University for my Social Science Education Credential. I also hold a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Concord University and a Doctorate from Capella University.  During my time in education, I have worked in Mason and McDowell Counties as a teacher.

As an educator, I believe my main focus is to equip students with the skills to be successful and productive members of society. As a society, we know that education is the key to a quality life. Therefore, I take the education of each child seriously, and will work continuously ensure that each student has access to a first-education. Every student deserves a first-rate education, and it is my personal mission to ensure they receive that education.

Lets Go Bobcats!
